Itzpapalotl - Clothing & Accessories for the Freedom Fighting
Itzpapalotl, a clothing line started in the fall of 2005 in the town of Oakland, California. This is an eco-clothing line created out of remnant fabrics, second-hand garments and vintage textiles, printed with original images designed by the designer or other artists. Each piece is completely different than the other.
Itzpapalotl is a one women sewing workshop and print shop. Amelia Berumen is always down to collaborate with other designers, writers, artists and printmakers.
The name Itzpapalotl (its pahpah LO tl ) is inspired by the indigenous people of Latin America as "Obsidian Butterflies", women and men draped in their bright trajes, vivid and beautiful against their dark skin. Itzpapalotl was the Aztec goddess, the Obsidian Butterfly. Itzpapalotl was the warrior goddess who fought with claws of obsidian and flew with wings of a butterfly. The clothing is inspired by artists and people who fight for their community, who paint murals to beautify their environment, who portray this warrior goddess or god.
